A lifted fingernail has separated from its nail bed, often beginning at the tip or sides. Repeated tapping, picking, manicures, solvents, moisture, infection, and inflammatory skin disease can contribute. A change in colour may occur because air, debris, or organisms occupy the gap. Fungal nail infection and nail psoriasis can look similar, so a clinician may need to examine the nail closely or test material from it.

File or clip the free, detached edge so it cannot catch on clothing, but leave firmly attached nail in place. Wash gently, dry carefully, and use protective gloves for dishes or chemicals. Pause gel, acrylic, and decorative manicures until the nail and skin are healthy. Avoid cleaning under the nail with sharp tools. If the fingertip is sore, cover it with a light, dry dressing and change it when damp. Treatment may involve a targeted medicine once the cause is clear.

Get prompt medical help for throbbing pain, pus, marked swelling, spreading redness, fever, or a new dark streak.
