One-sided tonsillitis: symptoms and when to seek care

Tonsillitis is inflammation of a tonsil, commonly during a viral throat infection; Strep Throat is one bacterial cause. Pain may be stronger on one side and can spread toward the ear. Fever, Sore Throat and Swollen Glands may occur. A very swollen tonsil, a muffled voice, difficulty opening the mouth, drooling or a uvula pushed away from the swollen side can signal an abscess beside the tonsil, which needs prompt assessment.

Sip cool or warm fluids, choose soft foods, rest, and avoid smoking or other throat irritants. Follow label directions for suitable pain or fever relief. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine: a clinician may need to examine your throat and decide whether testing is appropriate. Get emergency help if you cannot breathe, swallow saliva, or keep fluids down, or if swelling is rapidly increasing. Seek same-day medical care for severe one-sided pain, a muffled voice, difficulty opening your mouth, neck swelling, dehydration, or worsening symptoms. Assessment is also sensible when symptoms persist, recur, or include a high fever.
