One Side of the Top Lip Swollen: What to Know

A new product, food, bite, dental issue, cold sore, or minor injury can affect one part of the lip. Angioedema is deeper swelling that may occur with hives or may appear alone, sometimes after a medicine or food exposure. Infection is more concerning when swelling is painful, hot, increasingly red, or accompanied by pus, tooth pain, or fever. The timing and associated symptoms help a clinician identify the cause.

Stop any newly introduced lip, dental, or cosmetic product and avoid rubbing the area. Use a cool compress wrapped in cloth for short periods. Do not apply unfamiliar creams or take someone else’s medicine. Note recent foods, medicines, bites, injections, dental work, and whether swelling is spreading. Contact a healthcare professional for advice if the cause is unclear or the swelling persists.

Call emergency services immediately if swelling involves the tongue or throat, or if you have trouble breathing, swallowing, speaking, dizziness, or widespread hives. Seek prompt assessment for fever, severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, facial redness, or dental pain. Recurrent episodes should be reviewed even if they settle, because the trigger may need investigation.

Ask whether the pattern fits angioedema, infection, contact irritation, or a dental cause; which exposures to record; and what action plan to follow if swelling returns. Bring a list of recent medicines and products.
