One side nose blocked: remedies and next steps

Short answer
A one-sided blocked nose may improve with gentle saline care and trigger avoidance, but persistent, painful, or unusual blockage needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why one nostril may feel blocked
Nasal tissue naturally changes side to side during the day, but persistent blockage can occur with a common cold, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, chronic sinusitis, or irritation. A deviated nasal passage, polyp, or another local problem can also narrow one side. Notice discharge, facial pressure, reduced smell, sneezing, itching, nosebleeds, and whether symptoms worsen around dust, pets, or strong scents. Blockage at night with loud snoring or pauses in breathing may need assessment for obstructive sleep apnoea.
Ways to ease the blockage
Use a sterile or properly prepared saline spray or rinse as directed, keep hydrated, and avoid smoke and known irritants. Wash hands and consider allergy control if dust or seasonal exposure triggers symptoms. A pharmacist can explain whether allergy medication is suitable; some decongestant sprays can cause rebound blockage when used for too long, so follow the label. Do not forcefully insert cotton buds or other objects into the nostril. If symptoms continue despite self-care, arrange a GP or ear, nose, and throat assessment.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, or a serious allergic reaction. Arrange prompt review for one-sided blockage with repeated nosebleeds, blood-stained discharge, severe facial pain, swelling around the eye, vision changes, high fever, or marked worsening. Persistent blockage without a cold or allergy trigger should also be checked, particularly when smell is reduced or symptoms are limited to one side.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern suggests allergy, infection, or a structural narrowing; whether you need an examination or nasal treatment; and how long to use any spray. Tell the clinician about nosebleeds, discharge, smell changes, snoring, medicines, and possible triggers.

Questions people ask
Can I use a decongestant spray for a blocked nostril?
A pharmacist can advise, but use it only as the label directs because prolonged use may worsen blockage.
When does one-sided nasal blockage need review?
Arrange review when it persists without a clear cold or allergy, or occurs with bleeding, severe pain, fever, or eye symptoms.
