On and off flank pain

Flank pain is felt between the ribs and hip, often on one side. A muscle strain may worsen with movement, twisting, or touch. Kidney Stones can cause waves of severe pain that move toward the groin, sometimes with nausea or blood in urine. Kidney Infection may cause flank or back pain with fever, chills, painful urination, or feeling unwell. A Urinary Tract Infection usually causes urinary symptoms, although the location and severity vary.

Note which side hurts, how long each episode lasts, what triggers it, whether it travels, and whether you have urinary, bowel, skin, breathing, or fever symptoms. This information helps separate a muscular pattern from an internal cause.

Rest from movements that clearly aggravate the pain, but avoid prolonged bed rest. Drink normally unless a clinician has restricted your fluids. Follow label directions for any suitable pain medicine and check first if you have kidney disease, stomach ulcers, are pregnant, or take other medicines. Arrange an assessment when episodes recur, interfere with activity, or occur with urinary changes.

Seek urgent help for flank pain with fever and shaking chills, repeated vomiting, inability to pass urine, visible blood in urine, faintness, confusion, severe or rapidly worsening pain, or a swollen abdomen. Pregnancy, one functioning kidney, or known kidney disease lowers the threshold for prompt medical advice. Sudden pain with weakness or breathing difficulty also needs immediate assessment.

Ask whether the pain pattern suggests muscle, stone, infection, or another source; whether urine testing or imaging is needed; which analgesics are safe for you; and what changes should trigger urgent review.
