On and off fever and chills

Chills are episodes of feeling cold or shivering that can happen while body temperature is rising. Influenza and other infections can cause this pattern. Urinary Tract Infection or Kidney Infection may be accompanied by urinary discomfort, back or side pain, nausea, or vomiting. Pneumonia may bring cough or breathlessness. Malaria and Dengue Fever require particular attention after relevant travel or mosquito exposure. Sepsis is a medical emergency associated with severe infection and can involve confusion, fast breathing, or marked weakness.

Note when shaking starts, how long it lasts, the measured temperature, and whether symptoms return after medicine. Mention travel, insect bites, recent procedures, pregnancy, and immune problems.

Sip fluids often and rest. Take temperature readings with the same device and method, and keep a written timeline. Use only medicines suitable for you and follow the package directions; ask a pharmacist about duplicate ingredients. Keep away from vulnerable household members if a contagious infection is possible, and arrange an assessment if the episodes continue.

Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, difficulty breathing, chest pain, severe headache with a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, very little urine, or a rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician promptly for fever with flank pain, painful urination, a new rash, or recent travel to a malaria area. A child, older adult, pregnant person, or immunocompromised person may need advice sooner.

Ask which findings suggest a urinary, lung, mosquito-borne, or other infection; whether testing is needed; how to manage fluids and fever; and which changes should send you to emergency care.
