A hysteroscope passes through the vagina and cervix into the uterine cavity. A light and camera send an image to a screen, while fluid gently opens the cavity so the clinician can see the lining and openings of the fallopian tubes.

The device may be used for diagnostic hysteroscopy when the aim is to investigate symptoms or an ultrasound finding. It can also support operative hysteroscopy, in which small instruments remove or treat a selected problem.

Your clinician will explain whether the procedure is in a clinic or operating theatre, what pain relief or anaesthesia is planned, and whether you need to avoid food or drink beforehand. Tell the team about pregnancy possibility, medicines, allergies, and previous reactions to anaesthesia.
