The word describes the pattern and extent of spread, not a separate type of skin cancer. A specialist team maps where melanoma is present, considers whether each area can be treated, and checks the wider picture before recommending a plan. Sites can include lymph nodes, skin or soft tissue, lungs, liver, or the brain; the location changes which options are practical.

Assessment may involve scans, examination of known lesions, and sometimes tissue sampling. A diagnosis of limited spread does not predict the same outcome for every person. The plan depends on the number, size, position, pace of growth, previous treatment, and overall health.

Ask for a clear explanation of every involved site and whether the aim is to remove, destroy, control, or shrink the disease. Focused procedures such as tumour removal surgery may be discussed for suitable lesions, while immunotherapy can address melanoma throughout the body. Surgery and other local treatments are selected according to anatomy and scan findings.

Keep a written list of medicines, symptoms, scan dates, and questions. Follow the agreed surveillance schedule even when you feel well. A melanoma review can also cover the original skin lesion, lymph nodes, and any new or changing marks.

Contact your oncology team promptly for a new severe headache, seizure, confusion, weakness, trouble speaking, repeated vomiting, chest pain, or sudden breathlessness. These symptoms need assessment because melanoma can affect organs such as the brain or lungs, and because treatment side effects can also require urgent care. Do not wait for the next routine scan.
