What should you know about old age skin bumps on face?

A firm, pearly white bump can be a milium, a small keratin-filled cyst often seen around the eyes or cheeks. Red, tender, or pus-filled bumps around hairs can fit folliculitis. Tiny rough bumps may reflect keratosis pilaris, while heat and sweating can trigger heat rash. A cluster of flat-topped, itchy, purple-red bumps can occur with lichen planus. These patterns overlap, and a photograph or description alone cannot confirm the cause.

Age does not make every new bump abnormal, but a new or changing lesion deserves attention when it behaves differently from the surrounding skin. Avoid assuming that a bump is simply an age spot or trying to remove it with a household product.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then use a plain moisturiser. Do not squeeze, scrape, pierce, or repeatedly rub the bumps; this can cause infection, scarring, or prolonged inflammation. Note when they started, whether they itch or hurt, and whether new products, shaving, sweating, or medicines came before them. Take a clear photo in consistent light so changes are easier to notice.

A clinician can examine the surface and decide whether observation, a prescribed medicine, or removal is appropriate. Depending on the diagnosis, options may include antihistamine treatment for itch or cryotherapy for a suitable lesion. Treatments should match the diagnosis, particularly on thin eyelid skin.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if a bump grows, changes colour or shape, repeatedly crusts, bleeds, becomes an open sore, or does not settle. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, pus with worsening pain, fever, or eye swelling that affects vision. A lesion on the eyelid, nose, or lip may need an in-person examination because these areas are delicate and frequently exposed.

Bring a list of skin products and medicines, and mention any history of skin cancer, immune suppression, or frequent sun exposure. These details help the clinician choose whether monitoring, testing, or treatment is safest.
