What should you know about oily nose blackheads?

A blackhead is an open comedone: material at the pore opening darkens after exposure to air. The colour does not mean the pore is dirty. The nose has many visible pores and can look oily even when some dark dots are sebaceous filaments, a normal mixture of oil and skin cells that refills. Multiple blackheads can be part of comedonal acne. Inflamed, painful or pus-filled spots suggest a broader acne pattern rather than isolated non-inflamed plugs.

Wash with a mild cleanser, avoid abrasive scrubs and do not squeeze with fingernails, as pressure can injure skin and leave marks. A topical retinoid may help prevent new clogged pores when prescribed or recommended appropriately; introduce it gradually and protect skin from irritation. An acne extraction facial may remove selected plugs when performed by a trained professional, but extraction does not prevent new ones. Persistent or extensive acne needs a plan tailored to the skin and any other treatments you use.

Seek an assessment for painful nodules, spreading inflammation, repeated scarring, sudden severe acne or blackheads that do not improve with gentle care. A clinician can distinguish blackheads from sebaceous filaments and choose treatment. Isotretinoin treatment is reserved for particular acne patterns and requires medical supervision; it is not a routine answer for a few nose blackheads.

Ask whether the dots are blackheads or sebaceous filaments, whether a topical retinoid suits your skin, and how to combine treatment with cleanser and moisturiser. Mention pregnancy or pregnancy plans, sensitivity, scarring and any products that have caused irritation.
