Oily dandruff treatment: what to know

Oily scale forms when excess sebum mixes with shed skin on the scalp. Dandruff commonly appears as visible flakes with itching, while seborrheic dermatitis can also affect the hairline, eyebrows, ears, or sides of the nose. An itchy scalp and scalp flaking can have several explanations, so the appearance of the skin matters.

Wash the scalp consistently and follow the directions on a medicated shampoo rather than leaving it on longer than advised. Depending on the findings, a clinician may suggest medicated shampoo therapy or topical antifungal treatment. Avoid forceful scratching and heavy oily products that leave residue. Give one approach enough time to judge the response, and arrange a review if scaling returns quickly or spreads beyond the scalp.

Arrange medical assessment for painful areas, marked redness, oozing, crusting, hair loss, or thick plaques. Seek prompt care if swelling develops around the eyes or if a scalp eruption is rapidly worsening. Persistent symptoms despite careful product use deserve a diagnosis because psoriasis, infection, or another inflammatory condition may need different treatment.
