What should you know about oedema in abdomen?

Surface swelling can follow irritation, a bite, an injection, surgery, or an allergic reaction. It may be itchy, puffy, or limited to a patch of skin. A hot, painful, expanding red area can occur with cellulitis; hives can produce itchy raised patches; angioedema can cause deeper swelling. A general increase in abdominal size, pressure, pain, vomiting, or altered bowel function is not automatically skin oedema and should be described separately to a clinician.

Wear loose clothing, avoid a suspected new product, and keep the area clean and dry. Do not press, puncture, or massage a tender lump. Note when the change began, whether it is local or widespread, whether the skin is itchy or warm, and any new food, medicine, procedure, or injury. Arrange a review for unexplained, persistent, recurrent, or worsening swelling.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a rigid abdomen, repeated vomiting, faintness, or difficulty breathing. Prompt review is needed for fever, spreading redness, marked tenderness, pus, or swelling after a procedure. Lip, tongue, or throat swelling with breathing or swallowing difficulty is an emergency.

Ask whether the change is in the skin or deeper abdomen, what examination is needed, which medicines or products could contribute, and what warning signs should prompt immediate care.
