What should you know about ocular melanoma prognosis?

Prognosis is an individual estimate of how an eye melanoma may behave over time. The specialist considers where the tumour began, its size and cellular features, whether it affects vision-related structures, and whether tests show disease outside the eye. A prognosis can change as new examination and imaging information becomes available. It is not the same as a prediction for every person with ocular melanoma.

Ask the ophthalmic oncology team to explain which findings shape your outlook and which are still uncertain. Keep appointments for eye examinations and any recommended body imaging, because follow-up looks for local changes and possible spread. Treatment may include focused radiation such as brachytherapy or radiotherapy, depending on the tumour and your overall plan.

Contact your care team promptly for a sudden change in vision, new flashes or floaters, eye pain, marked redness, or a new loss of part of your visual field. Seek urgent help for severe eye pain with sudden visual loss, or for symptoms such as new breathing difficulty, confusion, or severe weakness.
