What should you know about occupational therapy for ADHD?

Short answer
Occupational therapy for ADHD can support attention, organisation, sensory regulation and everyday tasks through practical, personalised strategies.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the therapy involves
An occupational therapist looks at how ADHD affects real activities rather than focusing only on symptoms. They may explore time management, starting tasks, remembering instructions, managing belongings, handwriting, movement needs, sleep routines or coping with noise and busy spaces. The assessment usually considers strengths, habits and the demands of home, education or employment.
Support might include visual schedules, breaking a task into smaller actions, reminders, changes to the workspace, movement breaks and techniques for regulating frustration. Children may practise play, classroom routines or self-care; adults may work on planning, household tasks and workplace demands. Occupational therapy does not replace an ADHD assessment or other recommended treatment.
How to prepare and get started
Write down the situations that cause the most difficulty, such as losing items, missing appointments or becoming overwhelmed by sound. Note what has already helped and bring examples from a typical day. A clinician can then set goals that are observable, such as completing a morning routine with fewer prompts.
Ask whether the therapist has experience with ADHD across the relevant age group. Strategies work better when family members, teachers or colleagues can use the same prompts consistently, with the person’s consent. If concentration, anxiety or irritability are also affecting daily life, mention them during a mental health assessment.
When to seek additional help
Arrange a clinical review when attention problems, impulsivity or emotional overload interfere with learning, work, relationships, driving or personal safety. Seek urgent help if there is immediate danger, severe agitation, thoughts of self-harm or inability to care for basic needs. Occupational therapy can be one part of a wider plan, so worsening difficulties deserve reassessment.
Questions to ask
Ask what goals occupational therapy can address, how progress will be measured, whether a formal ADHD assessment is needed, and which strategies can be practised between appointments. You can also ask how therapy fits with medication, psychological support and adjustments at school or work.
