Occipital Trigger Point Release: What to Know

Short answer

Occipital trigger point release uses careful pressure, movement, and sometimes needling to address tender upper-neck muscles after other causes are considered.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be causing the tenderness

Small muscles beneath the back of the skull help position and steady the head. Sustained screen posture, jaw clenching, stress-related bracing, or repeated neck work can make these tissues tender. Pressing a sensitive spot may reproduce local pain or refer discomfort toward the scalp, but tenderness does not by itself establish the cause of a headache. Occipital nerves, neck joints, migraine, and other conditions can create similar symptoms.

An examination considers headache pattern, neck movement, sensation, strength, vision, and warning symptoms. Myofascial Pain Syndrome may include persistent sensitive muscle areas, while Trigger Point Therapy focuses on selected tender bands rather than treating every headache as a muscle problem.

What release can involve

A trained practitioner may use gentle sustained pressure, massage, breathing, neck mobility, and strengthening. Pressure should remain tolerable and should not cause electric pain, dizziness, visual symptoms, or prolonged worsening. At home, adjust screen height, take movement breaks, support the arms, and use a gentle exercise plan rather than repeatedly digging into the sore spot.

Dry Needling may be discussed for selected muscular findings. It involves a fine needle and requires a practitioner who can explain expected soreness, bleeding or infection precautions, and alternatives. Treatment should be paired with a plan to address posture, load, sleep position, or movement control when these contribute.

When to seek care

Get urgent medical help for a sudden severe headache, fever with neck stiffness, confusion, fainting, new weakness or numbness, vision or speech change, repeated vomiting, or pain after head injury. Book an assessment for headaches that are new, progressively worsening, frequent, or not behaving like your usual pattern.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what features support a muscular source, whether your headache needs another evaluation, which release technique is suitable, and what exercises should follow. Mention blood-thinning medicines, bleeding problems, skin conditions, and any neurological symptoms before needling.

Questions people ask

Can I release an occipital trigger point myself?

Use only gentle, comfortable self-massage or mobility advised by a professional. Avoid forceful pressure at the base of the skull or on the front and side of the neck.

Does a tender spot explain every headache?

No. Headache patterns have several possible causes. Neurological symptoms or a sudden change in pattern should be assessed urgently.
