What should you know about a failed OAE hearing test?

Short answer

A failed OAE hearing test means the device did not record a clear inner-ear response, so follow-up testing is needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a failed screen can mean

OAE equipment records echoes from the cochlea through a small ear-canal probe. A result may not pass when the probe seal is poor, the person moves, the room is noisy, or the ear canal is blocked. Fluid behind the eardrum, congestion or Earwax Buildup can also interfere. Sometimes the cochlea is not producing a measurable response, but the screen alone cannot establish the reason or describe the full pattern of hearing.

What to do next

Keep the follow-up appointment even if the person seems to respond to everyday sounds. The clinician may inspect the ear, remove a blockage when appropriate, repeat the OAE measurement or arrange a complete Hearing Test. Share details about recent colds, ear infections, family hearing history and any observed response to sound. Avoid putting cotton buds or objects into the ear while waiting for review.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical assessment for sudden hearing change, severe ear pain, fluid or blood from the ear, new facial weakness, or dizziness that makes walking unsafe. Otherwise, follow the recommended testing timeline: early clarification matters because hearing information can guide communication support and treatment. A failed screen does not by itself confirm permanent hearing loss or Meniere's Disease.

Questions for your doctor

Was the ear canal clear and was the probe seal adequate? Should the OAE be repeated, or is a full Hearing Test more suitable? Could congestion, fluid or wax explain the result, and when should review occur?

Questions people ask

Does a failed OAE test mean permanent deafness?

No. Blockage, fluid, noise or technical factors can affect the screen, and follow-up testing is needed to clarify it.

Should the test be repeated?

Often the clinician will repeat it or arrange other hearing measurements after checking the ear and testing conditions.
