What is overactive bladder?

Short answer

Overactive bladder causes urgency, frequent urination, and sometimes leakage before reaching a toilet.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Core symptom
Sudden urinary urgency
May include
Frequency, night-time urination, or leakage
Assessment
History, urine testing, and sometimes urodynamic testing

Understanding the pattern

The bladder muscle can contract before it is full, creating a sudden urge that is difficult to defer. You may pass urine often during the day, wake at night, or leak on the way to the bathroom. OAB is a symptom pattern, not a diagnosis that explains every urinary problem; infection, medicines, constipation, pelvic-floor changes, and other conditions can cause similar symptoms.

A clinician may ask about drinks, toileting habits, bowel symptoms, medicines, pregnancy history, and how leakage occurs. A urine test can help look for infection or blood, while a bladder diary can show timing and triggers.

Practical first steps

Keep a short bladder diary, drink regularly rather than trying to avoid all fluids, and reduce drinks that clearly worsen urgency, such as caffeine or alcohol. Treat constipation if present and give yourself enough time to reach the toilet. Pelvic-floor exercises and structured bladder training can help retrain urgency; a clinician or pelvic-health physiotherapist can tailor the plan.

If symptoms continue, assessment may include urodynamic testing to study how the bladder and urethra store and release urine. Absorbent products can protect clothing while you seek treatment, but they do not address the underlying trigger.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical care for blood in the urine, fever or chills, burning with back or side pain, inability to pass urine, or new severe pelvic pain. Arrange a review for new leakage, rapidly worsening urgency, or symptoms that disturb sleep or daily activities.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which causes should be checked, whether a bladder diary or urine test is useful, and whether bladder training, pelvic-floor therapy, or medication fits your symptoms.

Questions people ask

Is overactive bladder the same as leaking urine?

No. Leakage can occur with OAB, but some people have urgency and frequent urination without leakage. Different forms of leakage have different triggers.

Can overactive bladder improve?

Symptoms can improve with measures such as bladder training, pelvic-floor work, trigger review, and treatment of an underlying cause.
