How does NuvaRing work?

The ring is placed inside the vagina and remains there during its scheduled use period. The hormones enter the bloodstream and work throughout the cycle; the ring does not block sperm physically. Some people notice a change in bleeding, breast tenderness, nausea, headache, or mood. These effects can settle, but persistent or troublesome symptoms deserve a clinical review.

The ring does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. A clinician can check whether an oestrogen-containing method is suitable if you have migraine with aura, a history of blood clots, certain liver conditions, or other risk factors.

Follow the product schedule supplied by your clinician, including when to insert and remove the ring. Wash your hands before handling it and check that it is in place. If it slips out, is removed for longer than advised, or you are unsure whether the schedule was followed, use the instructions that came with the product and ask a pharmacist or clinician about backup contraception.

Tell your prescriber about medicines and supplements, because some can reduce hormonal contraception reliability. A combined pill is another combined hormonal option to discuss.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden weakness, or a severe unusual headache or vision change. Arrange a prompt review for persistent heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or a possible pregnancy.
