Numb pointer finger and thumb: what to know

The thumb and index finger are supplied in part by the median nerve. Tingling in these digits that flares during sleep, phone use, typing, or wrist flexion can be seen with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. If sensation changes begin in the neck or shoulder and run down the arm, Cervical Radiculopathy becomes another consideration. Burning, electric sensations, reduced grip, or difficulty with fine tasks provide useful detail, while a symptom map helps show whether more than one nerve area is involved.

Write down the exact fingers involved and whether the palm or forearm is affected. Take breaks from repeated gripping and keep the wrist in a comfortable, neutral position during rest. Do not use a numb hand to judge hot surfaces or sharp objects. Book an assessment if the symptom is persistent or interfering with sleep, work, or dexterity; the clinician may check strength, sensation, wrist provocation, and the neck.

Get urgent help for sudden hand numbness accompanied by weakness, facial asymmetry, confusion, speech difficulty, chest pressure, or severe breathlessness.
