What should you know about NSC lung cancer prognosis?

Prognosis is an estimate of how a cancer may behave and how treatment may help; it cannot predict exactly what will happen to one person. For non-small cell lung cancer, clinicians consider the subtype, tumour size, lymph-node involvement, whether it has spread, molecular findings, lung function, other health conditions, and response to treatment.

A cancer that has spread to another organ, including the brain, may need a different combination of local and whole-body treatments. New scan findings do not automatically show why a symptom has appeared, so the timing and pattern of symptoms matter. Your outlook can be reassessed as treatment and test results change.

Ask your oncologist to explain the stage, pathology, genomic tumour profiling, treatment aim, and signs that treatment is working or needs changing. Write down whether the goal is to remove the cancer, control it, reduce symptoms, or support recovery after treatment. Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted medicines, immunotherapy, and palliative care may have different roles at different points.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, coughing a large amount of blood, sudden weakness, seizure, new confusion, or sudden changes in speech or vision. Contact the care team promptly for worsening cough, persistent hoarseness, fever, chest pain, dehydration, or a side effect that stops you taking medicines. Palliative care can help with breathlessness, pain, fatigue, and emotional support while cancer treatment continues or changes.

Ask what is known about the cancer’s stage and biology, what remains uncertain, how the proposed treatment may change the outlook, when scans will be reviewed, and which symptoms require immediate contact.
