Nose snoring remedies: what may help

Short answer
Nose snoring remedies focus on opening the nasal passages, treating congestion and checking for sleep-related breathing problems.

What nasal snoring can mean
Snoring happens when airflow makes relaxed tissues in the nose, mouth or throat vibrate during sleep. A blocked or narrow nose can make breathing through the mouth more likely and may make the sound louder. Allergic rhinitis and chronic sinusitis can cause swelling, mucus and reduced nasal airflow. Snoring may also occur with obstructive sleep apnoea, especially when there are pauses in breathing, gasping or marked daytime sleepiness. Nasal symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.
Steps to try
Notice whether snoring follows nasal congestion, dust exposure, a cold or seasonal symptoms. Saline nasal rinsing may clear mucus; use safe water and clean equipment according to the product instructions. Treat an identified allergy with advice from a pharmacist or clinician. Sleeping on your side, avoiding alcohol close to bedtime and keeping a regular sleep routine may reduce vibration. If weight is contributing, discuss a gradual weight-management plan. Do not rely on unverified anti-snoring devices or use a decongestant spray beyond its labelled duration.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical assessment if snoring is persistent, disrupts sleep or comes with witnessed breathing pauses, choking, morning headaches or daytime sleepiness. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, chest pain, confusion or an inability to stay awake. A clinician can examine the nose and throat and decide whether sleep testing or treatment for a nasal condition is appropriate.
Questions for your doctor
Could nasal swelling, allergy or sinus disease be contributing? Should I be assessed for obstructive sleep apnoea? Which nasal treatment is suitable for my symptoms, and how long should I use it?
