What should you know about norovirus chills?

Chills are shivering or a cold sensation that can occur as the body responds to infection or a changing temperature. With norovirus, they may appear with nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps or fever. Respiratory symptoms are less typical of a stomach infection. Influenza, malaria, dengue fever, pneumonia, a kidney infection or a urinary tract infection can also cause chills, depending on travel history and other symptoms.

Rest and take small, frequent sips of fluid. If vomiting or diarrhoea is present, an oral rehydration drink may replace lost water and salts. Dress comfortably, check your temperature if possible, and wash hands with soap and water after using the bathroom. Avoid preparing food for others while ill and clean areas contaminated by vomit or stool.

Get urgent medical help for confusion, collapse, severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, severe pain, blood in vomit or stool, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange prompt assessment for chills with a high or persistent fever, a stiff neck, rash, painful urination, back pain, cough or shortness of breath. Recent travel to a malaria area or mosquito exposure should be mentioned immediately.

Tell your clinician when the chills began, whether you measured a fever, what digestive symptoms are present, your travel history, medicines and fluid intake. Ask whether examination or testing is needed.
