What should you know about normal to oily skin?

Short answer

Normal to oily skin produces more surface sebum, which can create shine without being unhealthy, although blocked pores or inflammation may need treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical areas
Forehead, nose, and chin may look shinier
Routine principle
Clean gently and moisturise without clogging pores

What it means

Oil is made by sebaceous glands and helps support the skin surface. Shine may be strongest on the forehead, nose, and chin, while the cheeks remain comfortable or dry. Hormonal shifts, heat, humidity, stress, and some products can alter oiliness. Oil alone does not equal acne, but persistent blocked pores, blackheads, tender spots, or greasy scale can occur with Acne, Hormonal Acne, or Seborrheic Dermatitis.

What you can do

Wash gently rather than scrubbing, choose non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen, and remove makeup before sleep. Blotting papers can reduce shine without stripping the skin. Avoid harsh alcohol-based products and repeated washing, which may increase irritation and make a routine harder to maintain. If spots or inflammation persist, a clinician can discuss options such as Isotretinoin Treatment when appropriate.

When to seek care

Arrange a review for painful deep spots, scarring, sudden marked oiliness, persistent facial redness, or scale around the eyebrows, nose, ears, or scalp. Seek prompt advice for a rapidly worsening rash, swelling, or eye involvement. Treatment depends on whether the main issue is oil, acne, irritation, or another skin condition.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your skin shows acne, hormonal patterning, or seborrhoeic inflammation, which cleanser and moisturiser fit your routine, and when prescription treatment should be considered. Mention medicines, menstrual changes, and products that preceded the change.

Questions people ask

Does oily skin need moisturiser?

Yes. A light, non-comedogenic moisturiser can support comfort and reduce the urge to use harsh, drying products.

Does oily skin always cause acne?

No. Oil can contribute to blocked pores, but acne also depends on follicle changes, inflammation, and other factors.
