What should you know about normal nappy rash?

Short answer
Normal nappy rash is usually mild irritation caused by moisture, friction, or contact with urine and stool, and it often improves with gentle skin care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Moisture, friction, urine, stool, and irritating products
- Helpful habit
- Frequent changes with gentle drying
What it means
The rash may look pink or red on the skin covered by the nappy. It can be sore during cleaning, with small areas of scaling or spots. A snug nappy, frequent wetness, diarrhoea, or fragranced products can weaken the skin barrier. A rash that extends into skin folds, has satellite spots, blisters, crusting, pus, or a sharply defined edge may need assessment because irritation is not the only possible cause.
What you can do
Change wet or soiled nappies promptly, rinse with lukewarm water or use a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and pat rather than rub. Give the skin short periods of air exposure and apply a protective barrier recommended for infants. Avoid talcum powder, fragranced wipes, and scrubbing. An emollient can support the skin barrier; see Emollient Therapy for more information. If a clinician identifies a yeast-related rash, Topical Antifungal Treatment may be considered.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if the rash is spreading, very painful, blistered, weeping, crusted, or not improving with careful nappy care. Seek prompt help if your baby seems unwell, has a fever, is feeding poorly, or has fewer wet nappies. A clinician can distinguish irritation from yeast, bacterial infection, eczema, or another skin problem.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the appearance fits simple irritant rash, which barrier product and cleansing routine suit your baby, and what changes should prompt a review. Mention recent diarrhoea, antibiotics, new wipes, or a change in nappies.

Questions people ask
Can nappy rash be prevented?
Prompt changes, gentle cleansing, thorough patting dry, and a suitable protective barrier can reduce irritation, although no routine prevents every rash.
When might treatment be different?
A rash in the folds, with small surrounding spots, blisters, crusting, or poor improvement may need a clinician to check for another cause.
