What should you know about normal audiometry?

Short answer

Normal audiometry means the test detected hearing within the expected range across the sounds and pitches measured.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

The test
Audiometry records responses to selected tones and pitches.
A normal result
Hearing was within the expected range for the parts tested at that visit.

Understanding the result

During pure-tone audiometry, you respond to tones delivered through headphones or a sound-conducting device. The clinician records the quietest sounds you can detect at selected pitches. A normal result is reassuring for the tested hearing pathway at that visit, but it does not measure every aspect of communication. Speech understanding, sound tolerance, intermittent symptoms, and problems caused by the outer or middle ear may need separate consideration.

Using the result

Keep the report and note when hearing seems muffled, blocked, distorted, or difficult in conversation. Tell the clinician about noise exposure, ringing, dizziness, ear pressure, medicines, and whether symptoms affect one or both ears. Earwax Buildup can interfere with hearing and may need examination. If symptoms continue despite a normal test, ask whether a Hearing Test with speech measures or another ear assessment is appropriate.

When to seek care

Arrange urgent medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing change with severe dizziness, facial weakness, or neurological symptoms. Seek prompt review for recurrent spinning sensations, ear discharge, severe pain, or worsening one-sided tinnitus. Repeated vertigo with hearing fluctuation may require assessment for Meniere's Disease.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which frequencies and listening tasks were tested, whether both ears performed similarly, whether wax or congestion affected the result, and when repeat testing would be useful.

Questions people ask

Can hearing problems occur with normal audiometry?

Yes. Intermittent hearing changes, speech-in-noise difficulty, sound intolerance, and some ear problems may need additional assessment.

Should sudden hearing loss wait for a repeat test?

No. Sudden hearing loss needs prompt medical assessment, even if an earlier test was normal.
