Non-pigmented melanoma: what to know

Melanoma is a skin cancer that does not always contain visible brown or black pigment. A non-pigmented lesion may resemble irritation, a spot, a scar, or a small inflamed growth. Features that deserve attention include change in size or shape, uneven edges, bleeding, crusting, persistent tenderness, or a sore that does not heal.

A clinician examines the lesion with magnification and may recommend a biopsy. The laboratory result confirms what the cells are and helps determine next steps. A photograph can help you notice change, but it cannot replace an examination.

Book a skin assessment for a new, changing, bleeding, or persistent lesion, especially when it looks different from nearby marks. Do not repeatedly pick, burn, or apply unprescribed treatments to it. Bring a list of medicines and mention previous skin cancers or close family history if relevant.

If melanoma is confirmed, treatment may involve surgical excision and assessment of nearby lymph nodes. Further care depends on the depth and spread of the tumour; options can include skin cancer surgery, tumour removal surgery, or immunotherapy. Follow-up helps clinicians check the treated area and other skin.

Arrange prompt care for a lesion that changes quickly, bleeds without clear injury, forms a persistent crust, becomes painful, or develops a firm lump. Seek urgent attention for severe symptoms such as new neurological changes, seizure, or confusion; these require immediate assessment and do not establish the cause.

Ask: Could this lesion need a biopsy? What will the pathology report show? If melanoma is found, do I need wider excision or sentinel lymph node biopsy? What follow-up schedule and skin checks are appropriate?
