Non-mass enhancement is an imaging description. Contrast appears across an area of breast tissue rather than collecting in one rounded lesion. It can reflect benign change, high-risk tissue, or cancer, so the appearance alone does not establish the diagnosis.

A radiologist may recommend a targeted biopsy when the pattern, distribution, or timing of enhancement needs a tissue explanation. During the procedure, imaging helps guide a needle to the area, and several small samples may be taken. A pathologist examines the tissue and may use immunohistochemistry to study cell features.

Ask which imaging method will guide the sampling and whether you need to avoid anything beforehand. Share your medicines, allergies, bleeding history, and any possibility of pregnancy. Wear a comfortable top and arrange practical support if your clinic advises it.

Afterward, mild soreness, bruising, or a small amount of bleeding can occur. Follow the clinic’s wound-care instructions and use only pain relief that the team considers suitable. The report may describe benign tissue, a high-risk change, or cancer and may lead to further imaging or treatment planning.

Contact the biopsy team for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing swelling, spreading redness, drainage, fever, or worsening pain. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or signs of a serious allergic reaction after contrast or medication.
