What should you know about non-ischemic heart failure?

Possible contributors include long-standing high blood pressure, heart-muscle disease, abnormal heart rhythms, inflammation, valve problems, or effects from some medicines and illnesses. The label describes the likely cause; it does not by itself show how severe the heart failure is.

Heart failure can cause breathlessness, reduced stamina, cough, palpitations, or swollen ankles. Fatigue is also common because the body may receive less effective blood flow. These symptoms can have other causes, so assessment is needed.

Arrange a clinical review to discuss symptoms, blood pressure, pulse, medical history, and medicines. Assessment may include an electrocardiogram, blood tests, and an echocardiogram to examine heart structure and pumping or filling function.

Take prescribed medicines as directed and do not stop them suddenly without advice. Keep a record of breathlessness, swelling, weight changes, palpitations, and activity tolerance. A chronic disease review can help coordinate monitoring and treatment.

Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, blue or grey lips, or chest pressure that does not settle. Urgent assessment is also needed for a sudden marked increase in swelling or symptoms that prevent normal activity.

Ask which cause is suspected, what the tests show, how often your heart function should be checked, which symptoms should prompt urgent help, and whether your medicines or daily fluid and salt habits need adjustment.
