Non-infectious mastitis symptoms

Non-infectious mastitis can cause breast tenderness, warmth, swelling, redness, or a firm area without an infection being the cause. Symptoms may affect one part of the breast and can feel worse with pressure or movement.

Mastitis means inflammation of breast tissue. Non-infectious inflammation may follow irritation, blocked drainage, pressure, skin problems, or an inflammatory condition. A breast lump or pain is not enough to identify the cause by itself. A clinician may examine the breast and decide whether imaging or other assessment is needed.

Avoid tight clothing or repeated pressure on the tender area. Rest, drink fluids, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods if that feels soothing. Arrange medical assessment for a new breast lump, persistent redness or swelling, nipple discharge that is bloody or clear, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or symptoms that are worsening. Seek urgent help if you feel severely unwell, faint, confused, or short of breath. A breast symptom often has a benign explanation, but an examination is the safe way to distinguish causes.
