Non-Hodgkin lymphoma treatments: what to know

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a group of cancers rather than one single disease. The biopsy report identifies the cell type and features that shape the plan. Imaging, blood tests and sometimes a [PET-CT Scan](/treatments/diagnostics-and-staging/pet-ct-scan/) help show where lymphoma is located. Doctors also consider how quickly it is changing, whether it is causing symptoms such as [Night Sweats](/symptoms/night-sweats/), and your other health conditions.

Some people are monitored closely for a period when immediate treatment is not needed. Others begin treatment soon after diagnosis. The plan may change if lymphoma responds, returns or causes new problems.

Your haematology team may discuss [Chemotherapy](/treatments/systemic-therapy/chemotherapy/), antibody-based [Immunotherapy](/treatments/systemic-therapy/immunotherapy/), or [Radiotherapy](/treatments/radiation-oncology/radiotherapy/) for selected areas. If lymphoma returns or does not respond adequately, options may include [CAR T-Cell Therapy](/treatments/cellular-and-transplant-therapy/car-t-cell-therapy/) or an [Autologous Stem Cell Transplant](/treatments/cellular-and-transplant-therapy/autologous-stem-cell-transplant/). Ask for a written plan covering appointments, medicines, infection precautions, fertility considerations and who to call. Keep a record of fever, new pain, swelling, breathlessness and changes in energy.

During treatment, contact the cancer team urgently for fever, chills, new breathlessness, chest pain, unusual bleeding, severe diarrhoea, confusion or inability to keep fluids down. Emergency care is appropriate for severe breathing difficulty, collapse or sudden neurological changes. Do not wait for the next appointment when symptoms are rapidly worsening; treatment can affect blood counts and immune function, and the team may need to assess you promptly.

Ask: What subtype do I have? What is the aim of treatment? Do I need treatment now or active monitoring? Which side effects need a same-day call? Could treatment affect fertility, work or vaccinations? What happens if the lymphoma returns? Is a transplant or cellular therapy relevant to my situation?
