Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the armpit: what should you know?

Lymph nodes in the armpit drain parts of the arm, chest, and breast. They can enlarge with infection, inflammation, medication effects, or cancer. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma can involve these nodes, and may also affect nodes elsewhere or tissues outside the lymphatic system.

A clinician considers how long the lump has been present, whether it is changing, whether there are other enlarged nodes, and whether symptoms such as fever, fatigue, or night sweats accompany it. These features guide assessment but do not diagnose lymphoma.

Book a clinical assessment for a lump that persists, grows, feels unusual, or has no clear explanation. The examination may be followed by blood tests, ultrasound or other imaging, and a biopsy if tissue identification is needed. A PET-CT scan may help map active areas after a diagnosis or when the team is planning care.

If lymphoma is confirmed, treatment depends on the subtype and extent. Options can include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, CAR T-cell therapy, or an autologous stem cell transplant in selected cases.

Seek prompt review for an armpit lump with persistent fever, drenching night sweats, unexplained tiredness, or an enlarging area. Seek emergency care for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, severe weakness, or rapidly worsening illness.

Ask whether the lump feels like a lymph node, what tests are appropriate, and when a biopsy is needed. If lymphoma is found, ask which subtype it is, whether other regions are involved, and how the proposed treatment could affect arm movement or skin.
