What should you know about non-Hodgkin's lipoma?

The phrase “non-Hodgkin's lipoma” combines two separate terms. A lipoma is made of mature fat cells and often feels soft, rubbery, and mobile under the skin. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a group of cancers involving lymphocytes and lymphatic tissues; it is not another type of lipoma. A lump cannot be identified reliably from a name or from touch alone, so a clinician may examine its depth, mobility, growth, and surrounding skin.

Arrange an examination for a new, changing, painful, deep, or bothersome lump. The clinician may monitor a typical small lump or recommend imaging when its borders or depth are unclear. If removal is chosen, the tissue can be examined to confirm the diagnosis. Do not squeeze, puncture, or repeatedly massage a lump, since that can irritate the area and make changes harder to assess.

Seek prompt medical review if a lump grows quickly, becomes fixed, feels unusually firm, causes persistent pain, or is associated with numbness or weakness. Also report unexplained fever, drenching night sweats, or unintentional weight loss. These findings do not prove lymphoma, but they need assessment rather than reassurance based on appearance alone.

Ask whether the lump appears superficial or deep, whether imaging is needed, what changes should trigger review, and whether removal would provide useful confirmation or symptom relief.
