What should you know about non-Hodgkin disease?

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is not one single illness. Different subtypes can grow slowly or quickly and may involve lymph nodes, blood, bone marrow, or organs outside the lymphatic system. The subtype and extent of disease guide the care plan.

Assessment can include an examination, blood tests, imaging, and a biopsy. A biopsy allows a specialist to study the cells and identify features that cannot be confirmed from a symptom or scan alone. Night sweats can occur with lymphoma, but they also have many other causes.

Arrange an appointment with a clinician if you notice a persistent lump, unexplained symptoms, or repeated night sweating. Bring a list of medicines, previous illnesses, symptoms, and any change in weight or energy. If lymphoma is confirmed, ask which subtype is present and whether further tests are needed before treatment.

Treatment may involve chemotherapy, radiotherapy, antibody-based or other systemic treatment, or a stem-cell approach in selected circumstances. Fertility preservation can be discussed before treatment when future pregnancy may matter.

Seek prompt medical advice for a lump that persists or grows, drenching night sweats, ongoing fever, marked tiredness, or unexplained weight change. Urgent help is needed for severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, sudden weakness, or bleeding that will not stop.

Ask which lymphoma subtype you have, what the biopsy shows, whether the disease is limited to one area or more widespread, and what each treatment is intended to do. Ask about fertility, infection precautions, and symptoms that should trigger a call.
