What should you know about non cell lung cancer prognosis?

Prognosis is an individual estimate, not a fixed prediction. The team considers whether the tumour is limited to the lung, involves lymph nodes or has spread elsewhere, including the brain. Tissue type, molecular findings and important health conditions also influence the discussion.

The course can change as the cancer responds, stays controlled or grows despite treatment. A scan, examination and symptoms together give more useful information than one symptom or one test result.

Ask your oncologist to explain the treatment goal in plain language, what signs will show whether it is helping, and when scans or reviews will reassess the plan. Genomic tumour profiling may reveal treatment options for a tumour with a particular molecular change.

Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and other systemic treatments may be used according to the cancer's extent and biology. Palliative care can help with breathlessness, pain, fatigue, emotional strain and planning alongside active treatment.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, coughing up substantial blood, new confusion, a seizure, sudden weakness, severe headache or fainting. Contact the cancer team promptly for fever, uncontrolled pain, dehydration or a sudden decline in function.

Ask what stage and subtype have been confirmed, which factors most affect your outlook, how treatment response will be measured, what the next review will assess, and whether specialist supportive or palliative care would help now.
