Non-bacterial prostatitis

Prostatitis describes inflammation or irritation involving the prostate and nearby pelvic tissues. Non-bacterial forms may cause pain between the scrotum and anus, discomfort with ejaculation, painful urination, urinary urgency, frequent urination, or a weak stream. Symptoms can fluctuate and may be linked with pelvic muscle tension, nerve sensitivity, or bladder irritation. A negative urine test does not mean the symptoms are imaginary, but it may change which treatments are useful. A urinary tract infection and other conditions can produce similar symptoms.

Arrange a GP consultation for a history, examination, and tests suited to your symptoms. Keep track of pain, urinary changes, bowel symptoms, sexual symptoms, and possible triggers. Gentle movement, warmth, regular hydration, and avoiding activities that clearly worsen pain may help some people. A clinician may discuss pain relief, pelvic-floor therapy, bladder strategies, or other medical management. Antibiotic treatment is not automatically useful when bacterial infection has not been found.

Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, develop fever or chills, feel very unwell, have severe worsening pain, or notice blood in urine. These features can require rapid assessment for infection, obstruction, or another problem.
