What should you know about nodular melanoma treatment?

Nodular melanoma is a form of melanoma that may grow downward early, so a raised or changing lesion deserves prompt specialist assessment. A biopsy or excision provides tissue for pathology. The report can describe tumour depth, ulceration, and the condition of the edges removed. Doctors then consider whether nearby lymph nodes or other parts of the body need assessment.

Treatment is individual. Removing the tumour with an appropriate margin is central when the disease is confined to the skin. A sentinel lymph node biopsy may provide staging information. If melanoma has spread or has features that raise recurrence concerns, systemic treatment such as immunotherapy may be discussed.

Do not pick, shave, or attempt to remove a suspicious nodule at home. Arrange a dermatology appointment and bring a list of medicines and prior skin-cancer history. After diagnosis, ask for the pathology report and the planned staging pathway. Surgery may be performed as excisional surgery or another form of skin cancer surgery, depending on location and extent.

After treatment, protect healing skin as directed and attend surveillance visits. Report a new changing mark, a lump near the scar, or a persistently enlarged lymph node. If additional treatment is advised, ask how it works, how it is monitored, and which symptoms should be reported.

Seek prompt review for a new nodule or one that changes, bleeds, crusts, or does not heal. Contact the treating team quickly after diagnosis if the wound becomes increasingly red, swollen, hot, or draining. Emergency assessment is appropriate for sudden neurological symptoms, breathing difficulty, or severe allergic symptoms during treatment.

Ask what the biopsy shows, whether the margins are clear, and whether lymph-node assessment or imaging is needed. Ask why surgery, immunotherapy, or observation is being recommended, what follow-up involves, and how treatment side effects will be managed.
