Prognosis is an estimate of how a melanoma may behave and how treatment may work. A pathology report helps the team assess tumour thickness, ulceration, and whether cancer cells are present beyond the original skin site. A sentinel lymph node biopsy may help clarify whether nearby lymphatic drainage contains melanoma. A thinner tumour found before spread generally gives doctors more treatment options, but an individual outlook cannot be decided from the word nodular alone.

Nodular melanoma often appears as a new, raised or firm lesion that changes over a short period. It can be dark, pink, or skin-coloured. These features warrant assessment, not self-diagnosis; a skin lump is not proof of cancer.

Arrange prompt review with a dermatologist or skin-cancer team for a changing nodule. Diagnosis usually involves examination and removal or sampling of the lesion, followed by pathology. If melanoma is confirmed, staging may include examination of lymph nodes and imaging when clinically indicated. Treatment can include surgical excision, with wider surgery or immunotherapy considered according to the stage and pathology.

Keep copies of the pathology and staging results. Follow the recommended skin checks and examine your skin and lymph nodes between visits. Follow-up after cancer treatment helps detect a new melanoma or a change that needs review.

Book a prompt skin assessment for a nodule that enlarges, bleeds, crusts, changes colour, or develops an uneven border. Seek urgent medical help for severe symptoms such as new weakness, confusion, seizures, or a severe persistent headache, especially if melanoma has already been diagnosed.
