What should you know about erythema nodosum causes?

The nodules are often warm, painful, and bruise-like as they change colour. They commonly appear on the shins, though other areas can be involved. A recent throat or other infection, a medicine, pregnancy, or an inflammatory illness can be associated with the reaction. Sometimes no clear trigger is found.

Red skin has many explanations. Cellulitis tends to cause expanding warmth and tenderness, while Contact Dermatitis may follow exposure to an irritant or allergen. Rosacea, Psoriasis, Heat Rash, and Sunburn have different patterns and surface changes. A clinician examines the lesions and may review medicines, recent illness, and other symptoms rather than identifying a cause from colour alone.

Arrange a medical appointment if tender nodules persist, recur, or are accompanied by fever, joint pain, cough, stomach symptoms, or unusual tiredness. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, note recent infections, and photograph changes over time. Resting the legs, elevating them, and using a cool compress may ease discomfort if these measures suit you.

Do not squeeze the nodules or apply strong steroid, bleaching, or antibiotic products without advice. Treatment is directed at the inflammation and any identified trigger. An IPL Photofacial is not a way to diagnose the cause of new painful nodules.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain out of proportion to the skin findings, high fever, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, or swelling of the face or throat. Prompt review is also sensible when one leg becomes markedly swollen and painful, or when a red area develops drainage or a darkening centre. These features can signal a problem needing treatment beyond routine skin care.
