No Stretch Marks During Pregnancy: What It Means

How the structures involved in Stretch Marks differ from normal

Short answer

Having no stretch marks during pregnancy is normal and does not predict how your skin will change later.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Stretch marks, also called striae distensae or striae gravidarum, form when skin is stretched and deeper skin fibres change. They may appear on the abdomen, breasts, hips, thighs or lower back, but not everyone develops them. Their absence is not a sign that anything is wrong with the pregnancy, and their presence is not a sign that you have done anything wrong.

What it means for your skin

Skin can change at different stages of pregnancy, during weight changes, or after birth. A mark may become noticeable later as colour, swelling and skin tension settle. Early stretch marks can look pink, red, purple or darker than nearby skin; older ones often become lighter and slightly indented. Skin type, family tendency, hormone changes and the amount and speed of stretching all influence whether they appear, so one pregnancy may look different from another.

What you can do

Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser if your skin feels dry or itchy, and avoid scratching irritated areas. Moisturising supports comfort but cannot reliably prevent stretch marks. Keep food and fluid intake appropriate for pregnancy rather than trying to control normal body changes. Check any cream, retinoid or supplement with your maternity clinician before use; some ingredients are unsuitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If marks remain bothersome after pregnancy, a dermatologist can discuss options such as Microneedling, Fractional Laser Treatment, RF Microneedling or Carboxytherapy, with timing based on healing, breastfeeding and your skin type.

When to seek care

No stretch marks alone do not need medical care. Contact your maternity clinician if itching is intense, widespread or keeps you awake, especially when there is a rash, yellowing of the skin, dark urine, pale stools or pain. Arrange an assessment for a mark that is bleeding, ulcerated, rapidly changing, very painful or unlike typical stretch marks. These features need their own evaluation rather than being assumed to be a normal pregnancy skin change.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: Does this mark have the appearance of a stretch mark? Could my itching be related to a pregnancy skin condition? Which skincare ingredients should I avoid while pregnant or breastfeeding? If I want treatment after delivery, when should I start and which option fits my skin tone and healing history?

Questions people ask

Is it normal to have no stretch marks during pregnancy?

Yes. Some pregnant people do not develop stretch marks, and their absence does not indicate a problem with the pregnancy or the skin.

Can stretch marks appear after delivery?

Yes. They can become noticeable during later skin stretching or after birth as swelling, colour and skin tension change.

Can moisturiser prevent pregnancy stretch marks?

Moisturiser can ease dryness and tightness, but it cannot reliably prevent stretch marks. Ask your maternity clinician about active ingredients.
