No spotting before your period: could you be pregnant?

Spotting before a period is not a required stage of the menstrual cycle. Its presence or absence can vary with normal hormone changes, contraception, stress, infection, polyps, fibroids, or changes in the cervix or womb lining. Pregnancy can also occur without spotting. If your period is late and pregnancy is possible, the missed period is more useful to act on than the absence of spotting. Seek urgent care for severe one-sided lower-abdominal pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, or heavy bleeding when pregnancy is possible. Arrange prompt review for bleeding after sex, recurrent bleeding between periods, bleeding with pelvic pain, fever, unusual discharge, or bleeding after menopause. These symptoms need assessment because the cause cannot be identified from spotting alone.
