What should you know about no no laser hair removal?

Short answer
Laser hair removal can reduce unwanted hair over a course of treatments, but results vary with hair, skin, hormones, device choice and aftercare.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Target
- Pigment in the hair and follicle
- Key limitation
- Growth cycles and hair colour affect response
How it works
The laser delivers light absorbed mainly by pigment in the hair. Heat travels toward the follicle and can reduce its ability to produce a hair, while hair growth cycles mean that only some follicles are in a responsive phase at any visit. Darker, thicker hair often responds differently from fine, light or grey hair. Skin tone, tanning, medicines and the treatment area also affect device settings and safety.
Laser hair removal may also be considered when shaving contributes to ingrown hairs or razor bumps. Persistent painful lumps, draining areas or recurrent inflammation need assessment for conditions such as hidradenitis suppurativa rather than cosmetic treatment alone.
Planning a session
At consultation, disclose tanning, recent sun exposure, medicines, pigment changes, scarring history and any active rash. Follow instructions about shaving and avoiding waxing or plucking, because the follicle needs to be present for the laser target. Your clinician may choose an alexandrite, diode or Nd:YAG laser based on your skin and hair characteristics. Protective eyewear is required. After treatment, protect the area from sun, avoid irritating products and follow advice about heat, friction and exercise.
When to seek care
Contact the clinic for blistering, marked swelling, severe pain, crusting or pigment change that is spreading or worsening. Seek assessment for pus, increasing warmth, fever or a painful lump. Urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty or swelling beyond the treated area.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which laser suits your skin and hair, how many visits may be needed, what reduction is realistic, how to prepare, and how a hormonal or inflammatory condition could affect the plan.

Questions people ask
Does laser hair removal remove every hair at once?
No. Hair follicles respond at different growth stages, so treatment is planned across multiple visits and some regrowth may occur.
Can it help with ingrown hairs?
Reducing hair growth may lessen shaving-related ingrown hairs for some people, but active or recurrent inflammation still needs a clinical assessment.
