What should you know about NK cell flow cytometry?

A laboratory mixes cells from a sample with antibodies carrying fluorescent tags. As cells pass through the instrument, the tags and physical properties are measured. A specialist then analyses patterns of markers to distinguish NK cells from other immune cells and to describe features such as maturity or activation.

The sample may be blood, bone marrow, or another tissue, depending on the clinical question. The report is interpreted with symptoms, examination findings, blood counts, imaging, and other laboratory results. A flow-cytometry finding by itself does not establish the full diagnosis.

Ask where the sample will be taken and whether any preparation is needed. Tell the team about medicines, recent infections, transfusions, and treatments that could affect blood or marrow cells. If a marrow sample is planned, ask how discomfort will be managed and when results are expected.

Keep the appointment for result review. Ask the clinician to explain which markers were tested, whether the cells were present in the expected pattern, and whether another sample or test is needed to answer the original question.

After blood collection, seek help for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing swelling, or feeling faint. After a bone marrow biopsy, contact the team for persistent bleeding, worsening pain, redness, drainage, or fever at the procedure site.
