Short answer

Nizoral for cradle cap should only be used for a baby when a clinician has confirmed it is appropriate.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Condition
Cradle cap, or infantile seborrheic dermatitis
First consideration
Gentle softening and washing when appropriate
Medicine caution
Use ketoconazole only with infant-specific clinical guidance

What cradle cap is

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, causes greasy or dry scales on a baby’s scalp. It is often mild and does not mean the baby is unwell. Ketoconazole is an antifungal medicine, but not every case of cradle cap needs it, and an infant’s age, skin condition, and symptoms affect the decision. A clinician should check a rash that is very red, wet, painful, or spreading before any medicated product is used.

Gentle home care

For mild cradle cap, ask a clinician or pharmacist whether an unscented emollient is suitable. A short period of softening can make scales easier to lift with a gentle baby brush; never scrape or pull them off. Wash with a mild cleanser and keep products away from the eyes. Do not use adult shampoo, leftover medicine, or a stronger schedule without specific infant guidance. Emollient Therapy describes skin-softening care, while Topical Antifungal Treatment explains why antifungal medicines require a clear indication.

When your baby needs assessment

Contact a healthcare professional if the scalp is bleeding, oozing, swollen, unusually tender, or develops spreading redness. Arrange review for fever, poor feeding, marked discomfort, extensive rash, or hair loss. Seek urgent help if the baby has facial swelling or breathing difficulty after any product. These findings can signal irritation, infection, or another skin condition rather than uncomplicated cradle cap.

Questions for the clinician

Ask whether the appearance is typical cradle cap, whether an emollient is enough, and whether any ketoconazole product is suitable for your baby’s age. Clarify where it may be applied, how it should be rinsed, and which changes require same-day advice.

Questions people ask

Can I use Nizoral on my baby’s cradle cap without advice?

No. Ask a clinician first because infant skin is sensitive and cradle cap may not require antifungal medicine.

Should I remove every cradle-cap scale?

No. Soften scales if advised and lift them gently; scraping can break the skin and cause bleeding or irritation.
