What should you know about NIPT test in pregnancy?

Short answer

NIPT in pregnancy is a blood screening test that estimates the chance of selected chromosomal conditions, but it does not confirm a diagnosis.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the result means

The test analyses small fragments of pregnancy-related DNA found in the pregnant person's blood. It commonly screens for chromosome differences such as trisomy 21, trisomy 18 and trisomy 13. A higher-chance result needs careful discussion and usually another diagnostic test, such as amniocentesis, before decisions are made. A lower-chance result reduces concern for the conditions screened but cannot rule out every genetic or pregnancy problem.

NIPT is different from a diagnostic test. It may be offered alongside ultrasound assessment, including a nuchal translucency scan. The laboratory approach may use next-generation sequencing to examine DNA fragments.

What to do next

Before testing, ask what conditions the laboratory includes, how results are reported, and what follow-up is available. Give the clinician your pregnancy details and relevant family history. After the result, review it with an obstetric or genetics professional rather than interpreting a screening label alone. A result that cannot be reported may require a repeat sample or a different assessment.

When to seek care

Contact your maternity team promptly if the report shows a higher chance, cannot be interpreted, or recommends further assessment. Seek urgent pregnancy care for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting, or sudden shoulder-tip pain, regardless of the NIPT result.

Questions for your doctor

Which conditions does this NIPT include, and what would each possible result mean for me? What diagnostic options are available if the screen is higher chance? How will ultrasound findings be considered with the blood result?
