Nipple pain during sex

Pain can occur when touching, squeezing, suction, or a position puts more force on the nipple than feels comfortable. Eczema, a rash, a small crack, recent breastfeeding, hormonal breast changes, or an infection can make normal contact painful. Pain during sex elsewhere in the body may also point to conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, vulvodynia, or genitourinary syndrome of menopause; nipple pain by itself does not diagnose any of these conditions.

Notice whether the pain is on one side, begins before contact, or continues afterwards. That detail helps a clinician distinguish a mechanical trigger from breast, skin, hormonal, or pelvic causes.

Tell your partner what pressure and touch feel comfortable, and stop or change the activity when pain begins. Avoid rubbing over broken or irritated skin. A supportive bra between sexual activity and rest may reduce movement-related soreness. Do not apply fragranced products to the nipple. If pain keeps returning, arrange a clinical assessment rather than repeatedly pushing through it.

Seek medical advice for a lump, persistent one-sided pain, nipple discharge, bleeding, inversion, a new rash, redness, warmth, fever, or an open sore. Prompt assessment is also sensible when pain continues after sexual activity, is worsening, or comes with pelvic pain, unusual discharge, or fever. A clinician may examine the breasts, skin, and relevant pelvic symptoms.

Ask what examination is needed, whether a skin condition or infection could explain the pain, and how to protect irritated skin. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, medicines, contraception, menopause symptoms, pelvic pain, and any recent change in sexual activity.
