Nipple pain during ovulation

Breast tissue responds to the hormone rise around the middle of the menstrual cycle. You may notice sensitivity, fullness, tingling, or soreness when clothing or touch presses on the nipples. Hormonal contraception, pregnancy, breastfeeding, skin irritation, and an ill-fitting bra can create similar symptoms, so timing alone cannot identify the cause.

Ovulation pain itself is usually felt in the lower abdomen rather than the breast. If cyclical breast tenderness comes with pelvic pain that is severe, recurrent, or disruptive, discuss possible causes such as endometriosis or ovarian cysts with a clinician.

Track when the tenderness starts, which breast is affected, and whether it follows your cycle. A supportive, well-fitting bra, soft fabrics, and avoiding friction may help. A cool or warm compress can be soothing. Before taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, check that it is suitable for you, especially if you could be pregnant or have another medical condition.

Arrange medical advice for a new lump, nipple discharge that is bloody or clear, nipple inversion, skin dimpling, redness, warmth, fever, or pain that is one-sided and does not settle. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, or feeling acutely unwell. A breast examination can help separate hormonal tenderness from another breast or skin problem.

Ask whether the pattern fits cycle-related breast tenderness, whether pregnancy testing or a breast examination is appropriate, and which pain-relief options fit your health history. Mention medicines, contraception, breastfeeding, skin changes, discharge, and any family history of breast conditions.
