What should you know about night sweats lung cancer?

Night sweating is a general symptom. A warm bedroom, fever, medicines, alcohol, hormonal change or anxiety may explain it. Lung cancer can present with respiratory symptoms such as a cough that does not settle, coughing blood, chest discomfort, breathlessness or repeated chest infections, but night sweating is not specific to lung cancer. Tuberculosis is not among the linked conditions here, so a clinician should consider the full history rather than infer a diagnosis from sweating. Brucellosis, glandular fever, HIV infection, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic myeloid leukaemia and hyperthyroidism can also involve sweating or tiredness.

Arrange a medical review if sweating keeps returning, so the clinician can ask about smoking or vaping, work exposures, medicines, infections, weight change and breathing symptoms. Note the duration of any cough, whether phlegm or blood is present, chest pain, fever and how often clothes or bedding become wet. Do not delay an appointment because the sweating is mild, and do not assume that a scan is automatically needed; investigations should follow the examination and history.

Seek urgent assessment if you cough blood, develop severe or sudden breathlessness, have chest pain, become confused or faint, or cannot speak comfortably because of breathing difficulty. Prompt routine care is also sensible for a persistent cough, repeated chest infections, unexplained weight loss, fever or worsening tiredness. These warning signs guide urgency because of the symptom pattern, not because night sweating predicts a particular cancer.
