The implant continues to release etonogestrel during its approved period of use, but symptoms do not have to remain the same. Bleeding can become irregular or stop, and headaches, acne, breast tenderness, or mood changes may persist or appear later. A new symptom is not automatically caused by the implant.

The insertion site can also change. Scar tissue may make the rod feel different, while pain, warmth, swelling, discharge, or difficulty feeling it can suggest a local issue. A late change in bleeding may also have causes such as pregnancy, infection, thyroid disease, or another medicine.

Record when the change began and whether it follows bleeding, sex, exercise, a new medicine, or missed contraceptive care. Check the rod gently and arrange a review if it feels altered or cannot be felt. Confirm the replacement or removal date with the clinic rather than relying on symptoms. If you are considering another method, discuss the hormonal coil and its different bleeding profile.

Seek prompt care for new severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, spreading redness, pus, a rod that appears to be coming through the skin, or a rod you cannot feel. Get urgent help for severe abdominal pain with possible pregnancy, fainting, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, or one-sided weakness. A clinician may examine the arm, assess bleeding, and test for pregnancy or another cause.
