Nexplanon and weight: what to know

Nexplanon releases etonogestrel, a progestogen, from a small rod placed under the skin of the upper arm. Hormonal effects can alter appetite, bleeding patterns, fluid balance, or how your routine feels, while changes in activity, sleep, stress, medicines, thyroid function, and pregnancy can also affect weight.

A change that begins after insertion is worth recording, but timing alone does not prove the implant caused it. Look at the pattern over several weeks rather than reacting to a single measurement. A clinician can review your health history, medicines, eating and activity changes, and pregnancy possibility before discussing whether Nexplanon remains suitable.

Record when the change started, your bleeding pattern, appetite, sleep, activity, and any new symptoms. Use the same type of measurement under similar conditions, and avoid crash diets or unprescribed weight-loss products. Arrange a routine appointment if the change concerns you or continues.

At the appointment, ask whether another explanation should be checked and whether a different contraceptive would fit your priorities. Do not remove the rod yourself. If you choose removal, use a clinician and discuss replacement contraception so there is no unintended gap in pregnancy protection.

Seek prompt medical advice for rapid or unexplained change with marked thirst or urination, severe weakness, persistent vomiting, breathlessness, swelling, or a possibility of pregnancy. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding with dizziness. These symptoms need assessment rather than being attributed to Nexplanon.
