Nexium for acid reflux: what to know

Nexium is a brand name for esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor. It lowers acid production in the stomach and may relieve burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid returning to the mouth, or irritation related to reflux. It does not stop every cause of chest or upper-abdominal discomfort, so persistent or unusual symptoms should be assessed rather than treated repeatedly on your own.

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move upwards into the oesophagus. Reducing acid can give irritated tissue time to recover, but Nexium does not repair a hiatus hernia or remove triggers such as large meals, lying down soon after eating, or some medicines.

Some people notice improvement quickly, while others need a treatment course chosen by a clinician. Reflux may also appear as a cough, hoarse voice, or disturbed sleep rather than typical heartburn. A recurring cough can have several causes, so it should not automatically be attributed to reflux.

Follow the instructions on your prescription or the product label. Swallow delayed-release forms as directed rather than crushing or chewing them, and do not take extra doses because relief is incomplete. Tell a pharmacist or doctor about other medicines, pregnancy, liver problems, or a history of stomach or bowel disease before starting or continuing treatment.

Practical changes can support treatment: eat smaller meals, remain upright after eating, identify foods that reliably trigger symptoms, and raise the head end of the bed if night-time reflux is a problem. If symptoms return whenever you stop Nexium, arrange a review to confirm the diagnosis and plan the next step.

Seek urgent help for chest tightness or pain with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Do not assume these symptoms are reflux.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if you have trouble swallowing, food sticking, vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss, severe abdominal pain, or symptoms that are getting worse. A cough that persists despite treating reflux also deserves review, particularly if it affects breathing or sleep.
